It’s all Greek…

The Greek Islands have long been a haven for travellers seeking relaxation, sand and turquoise sea but, with dozens to choose from, which one’s for you?

From enjoying sensational sunsets in Santorini to exploring the ever-changing landscape of Crete, we’ve gathered together some of the best experiences Greece’s islands have to offer, and what makes each one stand out from the rest.

Santorini

Best for: Romance and envy-inducing photographs

Ah, Santorini! A postcard of whitewashed houses clinging to rugged cliffs, it never fails to conjure up images of pure paradise. Popular with honeymooners, the island is famed for its Instagram-worthy sunsets, volcanic black-sand beaches, and high-end wining and dining scene – not to mention its fascinating archaeological sites.

The island’s romantic appeal means it gets crowded during peak summer season, so if this bothers you, consider visiting in spring or autumn.

Crete

Best for: Exploring on foot

Greece’s largest island is also its most varied – making it the perfect destination for anyone looking to explore the great outdoors. Expect everything from white-sand beaches and lush green mountains to craggy coves and rugged canyons.

Samaria Gorge is a particular highlight, nestled within Samaria National Park. This huge gorge’s towering cliff faces, winding canyons and verdant forests make for fantastic hiking. Crete also has a wealth of archaeological sites, including the ancient Palace of Knossos, which dates from the time of the Minoan civilization.

Zakynthos

Best for: Seeing Mother Nature in abundance

Zakynthos (or Zante) has just about shrugged off its reputation as party central (as long as you avoid Laganas and the south coast), instead rebranding itself as one of Greece’s greenest islands.

The mountainous interior, with its sleepy stone villages and forested wilderness, is great for hiking and biking. The island is also a mecca for loggerhead turtles during nesting season and, while the turtle beaches are largely off limits, there are countless coves in every hue of green and blue to explore. Don’t miss a visit to Navagio Beach (also known as Shipwreck Beach), which is only accessible by sea.

Skiathos

Best for: Beaches straight out of a holiday brochure

Skiathos delivers above and beyond when it comes to coastal chic. Four of the best beaches – Big Banana, Little Banana, Ampelakia and the legendary Koukounaries – are within easy walking distance of one another. Take a trip into Skiathos Town, where harbour-view cocktail bars and gourmet restaurants are the backdrop of lively street parties all summer long.

Rhodes

Best for: Educational family breaks

Rhodes offers calm beaches and safe swimming, but it’s also great for family days out. Take a history tour around its ancient ruins and monuments – including the Acropolis of Rhodes which dates back to the fifth century BC. Rhodes Town is also well worth a visit, with Roman, Ottoman and Venetian occupations having all left their mark.

There are lots of convenient flights from the UK too.

Corfu

Best for: Culture, character and sheer variety

A long-time favourite with the royal family (the late Prince Philip was born here), the island boasts everything from white-sand beaches and buzzing nightlife to a historic past and a colourful mix of Venetian, French and English cultures.

Known as the ‘Emerald Island’, thanks to its rugged mountains, lush scenery and walking trails, Corfu really does have something for everyone!

Mykonos

Best for: Hedonistic beach parties

Known as the place to party in the Greek Islands, Mykonos is the destination if your ideal holiday features decadent resorts, beach bars and dance clubs.

However, there’s plenty more to do. Discover miles of spectacular beaches, loosen your purse strings at designer boutiques, catch a boat to the nearby archaeological site of Delos and grab dinner at one of Mykonos Town or Little Venice’s waterfront restaurants.
