5 European under-the-radar holiday destinations

Going on holiday can be an exciting adventure, but when a location is filled with too many tourists, it can detract from the experience. Instead, try these under-the-radar holiday destinations for an exceptional holiday that you can enjoy without feeling overcrowded.

Villajoyosa, Spain – the Mediterranean’s colourful secret

Villajoyosa, located on Spain’s Costa Blanca, is renowned for its vibrant pastel-coloured houses and rich chocolate-making heritage. Recognised as Europe’s best hidden gem in 2024, it boasts five Blue Flag beaches and a historic old town.

Visitors can explore the delightful Valor Chocolate Museum and enjoy fresh seafood at local eateries and restaurants. If you plan to visit by public transport, Villajoyosa is only a 50-minute tram ride away from Alicante. In other words, you can fly into Alicante, take the tram over, and enjoy a truly incredible stay without interference from the crowds. You’re also much more likely to get an authentic Spanish experience.

Primosten, Croatia – a coastal gem with a storied past

Just east of Split, you’ll find the truly gorgeous Croatian town of Primosten. This picturesque town was once an island, but is now part of Croatia’s incredible coastline. Recognised as one of the best hidden gems of 2024, the narrow streets, historical churches, and beautiful beaches tell an entrancing story. After a morning of exploring the town, we highly recommend relaxing by the sea on the Mala Raduca beach.

You might also be happy to know that Primosten is known for its red wine, Babic. As one of the top wines on the entire Dalmatian coast, this brand has become incredibly popular in recent years. Visit on your holiday to Croatia, and you’ll be able to visit the Matosin Vineyard and enjoy one of the freshest glasses of high-quality wine, alongside various meats and cheeses.

Faro, Portugal – gateway to secluded islands

Often overshadowed by other Algarve destinations, Faro is a charming city with a rich history and access to pristine beaches. In fact, a secluded island just 20 minutes offshore is dubbed the “Caribbean of Portugal”. When you visit the beach island known as Ilha Deserta, you’ll be entranced by its gorgeous golden sands and peaceful tranquillity.

But there’s more than beaches to enjoy. A range of cultural sites, like the Capela Dos Ossos and Museu Arqueológico de Faro, present various opportunities for you to learn more about this fascinating city and the local environment.
