Mini Marvels: A Journey Through Europe’s Smallest Destinations

Vatican

Europe is home to some of the world’s best-known tourist attractions. Some of these are to be found in the continent’s largest countries, like France, Italy, Spain and Russia. However, there are also smaller principalities to be found here – some of which punch well above their weight when it comes to tourist appeal.

Vatican City

At just under half a square kilometre, the Vatican City is the world’s smallest country. The enclave is home to some of Rome’s most impressive structures, and it’s of particular importance to Catholics. During your stay, you’ll want to pay a visit to St. Peter’s Basilica, the Vatican Museums, and (in particular) Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel. Just make sure that you’re arriving outside of peak tourist time if you want to avoid the crowds, and that you respect the country’s modesty laws. Exposed shoulders, midriff or legs are generally not permitted.

Monaco

Monaco lies on the southern border of France. At two square kilometres, it’s the most densely populated country in the world. During a stay here, you’ll be rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous. You might stroll through Monte Carlo and the luxury casinos that make it famous, or pay a visit to the marina, from where you can watch the yachts go by.

Of course, those visiting in May might also enjoy the Monaco Grand Prix. To do this, however, you’ll need to make a point of booking early.

San Marino

In comparison to the two microstates we’ve just mentioned, San Marino is fairly expansive. There’s a sizeable swathe of countryside to explore, including mountains, valleys, and rivers. From Guaita Tower, in the City of San Marino, you’ll be able to marvel not just at the surrounding city and all of its undeniable historic appeal, but at the countryside. If you’re touring Italy, including nearby Tuscany, a visit here is certainly worthwhile.

Liechtenstein

Liechtenstein is another mountainous part of the continent, favoured by hikers, particularly during summer. There are innumerable hills and valleys to explore, as well as ski slopes during the winter.

Malta

If you’re looking to spend time in the Mediterranean, then the island nation of Malta is sure to appeal. Some of the megalithic temples here are older than the Pyramids – and they’re in better condition, too.

Andorra

You’ll find Andorra in the middle of the Pyrenees, between France and Spain. It’s best known for the quality of its ski slopes during winter, and its hiking during the summer. In these respects, it resembles Lichtenstein. Andorra ski holidays are a great alternative to those in France, Switzerland, and Italy. To make the deal slightly sweeter, there’s duty-free shopping in Andorra throughout the year.

Luxembourg

Luxembourg sits midway between France and Germany. Here you’ll find a mixture of the histories and cultures that you might associate with these neighbouring countries. For a history-focused break, you might visit the old quarters of Luxembourg City, where the famous Vianden Castle stands.
