EVs substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions, especially as the UK’s electricity generation incorporates more renewable energy sources. In 2023, the UK achieved a record 60% share of clean electricity, which, combined with the adoption of 1.5 million electric vehicles and 430,000 residential heat pumps, reduced fossil fuel consumption equivalent to 14 million barrels of oil.

Charging Infrastructure in the UK: Present and Future

Plug-in Hybrid Models: A Bridge to Total Electrification

For those who aren’t ready to switch to a fully electric vehicle, plug-in hybrid models represent an excellent alternative. These vehicles combine an internal combustion engine with an electric motor, offering the best of both worlds.

The Niro Plug-In Hybrid, for example, combines a 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine with an electric motor, producing 180 horsepower. With an electric range of 33 miles and a total driving range of 510 miles, this model allows drivers to make most of their daily journeys in electric mode, reserving the combustion engine for longer trips.

Similarly, the Sportage Plug-In Hybrid offers an electric range of 34 miles, sufficient for most daily urban commutes, with a combined fuel efficiency of approximately 35 MPG.

Environmental Impact: Beyond Emissions

The contribution of electric vehicles to sustainability goes beyond reducing emissions during their use. EVs have a 58% lower environmental impact throughout their lifecycle than vehicles with internal combustion engines.

It’s true that manufacturing electric vehicles, particularly lithium-ion batteries, generates higher initial emissions compared to conventional cars. However, these emissions are offset within the first few years of use due to lower operational emissions.

Moreover, recycling efforts for electric vehicle batteries are constantly improving, with some manufacturers reusing up to 70% of battery materials. This circular economy is further reducing electric vehicles’ environmental footprint.
